AI Ethics Learning Toolkit

Our Design

How did our team collaboratively design the AI Ethics Learning Toolkit? The following principles guide our work together.

The toolkit was co-created by CARADITE’s two undergraduate research assistants–Emma Ren (T’27) and Barron Brothers (T’26)–throughout the spring 2025 semester. A core group of our team (Emma, Barron, Hannah Rozear, and Remi Kalir) met regularly to identify topics, curate resources, write content, design learning activities, provide feedback, and iterate.

The AI Ethics Learning Toolkit is the result of iterative prototyping and this site remains a work-in-progress. We hope that the toolkit’s simple format encourages its use across various learning contexts. A complementary version of the toolkit has been produced for Canvas Commons so that instructors with access to the Canvas LMS can easily integrate this toolkit directly into a course.

We are committed to keeping content in the AI Ethics Learning Toolkit fresh and up-to-date. We will update our activities and linked resources in response to technological and scholarly developments, as well as in response to the feedback we receive from people who use the toolkit in their teaching and learning efforts.

This version of the AI Ethics Learning Toolkit utilizes Google Doc accessibility settings, including screen reader support, braille support, and screen magnifier support.

In curating resources for the AI Ethics Learning Toolkit, we sought to publicize openly accessible scholarly and popular sources. While a majority of toolkit resources can be easily accessed without worry of a paywall or subscription, we have included a mix of references and media; some resources may require institutional access via a university or library. If you’re affiliated with Duke, please read our Instructors guide for notes about institutional access.

Each toolkit resource features at least one of the following icons to help you quickly understand both its format and accessibility:

  • 🔐 = Paywalled
  • 🌐 = Website, Blog post
  • 📰 = News, Magazine
  • 📕 = Book, Book chapter
  • ▶️ = Video
  • 📄 = Journal article, Report, Preprint
  • 🎧 = Podcast

We have published the AI Ethics Learning Toolkit with a CC Attribution Non-Commercial Share Alike license so educators, librarians, learning designers, and anyone else can easily make use of this content, including by remixing aspects of the toolkit (such as the Learning Activities) and then sharing new iterations with their colleagues and communities.
